Frequently Asked Questions
General Use
What does FindMyCousin do?
FindMyCousin helps you see how two people are related by scanning family tree and genealogy data. Just enter two deceased ancestors, and the site finds their connection.

Can I use FindMyCousin to see how two living people are related?
Yes! While you can’t enter living people directly, you can enter their deceased ancestors. If you know how you’re related to an ancestor, you can figure out how you’re related to someone else based on their ancestor.

How do I start an inquiry?
To start your first inquiry, go to the main search page, enter the names of two deceased ancestors, and submit.
To start a new inquiry, simply enter new names and run another search—there’s no need to reset anything.
If I want to check multiple people against one ancestor, is there a way to just change Person 2 and search again?
Right now, you’ll need to re-enter Person 2’s information for each search. A future update may make this easier.
How accurate are the results?
Results are based on publicly available genealogy records. If the records are accurate, your result should be, too. Future updates will allow you to refine results by adding your own relationship details.
What if no relationship is found?
This means the system didn’t find a direct link between the two ancestors based on available data. Try different ancestors or check for spelling variations. If the ancestor’s information isn’t in the database yet, users can create a free FamilySearch account and contribute their ancestral details.
Can I save or share my results?
This feature isn’t available yet, but it may be added in future updates.

Data & Privacy

Where does FindMyCousin get its data?
FindMyCousin pulls information from multiple international family tree databases.
Can I enter living people?
No. Living people don’t appear in public genealogy records, so the system only works with deceased ancestors.
Is my personal information stored?
No. FindMyCousin only uses the data you enter for the current search.
Features & Future Updates
Can I compare more than two ancestors at a time?
Not yet, but this is a planned feature. Right now, the site compares one ancestor from each person. This works, but it might miss a closer connection if they are actually related through a different ancestor. For now, checking multiple ancestors separately can potentially give a closer result, but the initial connection found can still be the closest depending on which ancestors are used.
Will I be able to add my own family tree?
A future update will allow users to enter their relation to ancestors, making it possible to determine how two living people are related.

What happens if I enter the same person twice?
The system will recognize it and let you know they are the same individual.

Can the site suggest possible connections if no direct relationship is found?
Not yet, but this is something we’re considering for future updates.
Technical Issues
What if I don’t know my ancestor’s full name or exact dates?
Try entering their first and last name. If the system struggles to find a match, you may need to check a genealogy website for more details.
What if the site gives incorrect results?
The system relies on public genealogy data, which can sometimes be incomplete or contain errors. If something seems off, cross-check the information with other sources.
Can I report incorrect data?
At this time, FindMyCousin does not allow direct edits to records, but we may add a reporting feature in the future.
